Under the leadership of the National Chief Imam of Ghana, Dr. Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, the Assemblyman for the Okaikwei Constituency, Hon. Mahfuz Bashir, has organised the youth of New Fadama, Greater Accra, for a community clean-up exercise. The initiative comes as part of activities organised ahead of the National Health Walk 2026 and the Grand Maulid, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Significance of the exercise highlights the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment and also the need for proper waste management and community cleanliness as efforts to help reduce pollution, prevent the spread of diseases, protect drainage systems and create safer spaces for residents.
The initiative emphasises that a clean environment is not only beneficial to people’s health but is also an essential foundation for building sustainable and resilient communities.

The initiative also looks to have active participation of young people to be of particular importance in achieving environmental sustainability.
By engaging in community clean-up activities, the exercise would be a springboard for youths to develop a stronger sense of responsibility for their surroundings along with encouraging others to adopt better environmental practices, continuous public participation, responsible waste disposal and collective efforts to protect natural resources for future generations.
Hon. Mahfuz Bashir noted that the purpose of the clean-up exercise goes beyond environmental sanitation. It is also intended to unite the nation, promote peaceful coexistence and remind the world that people can live together peacefully despite religious differences.
He posits that bringing people together around a common environmental cause demonstrates that protecting the environment can also serve as a powerful tool for building understanding and strengthening community relationships.
To this end, the wider message of the initiative is that: a clean environment and a peaceful society go hand in hand.
It further iterates that when communities work together to protect their surroundings, they create healthier places to live while strengthening unity, cooperation and shared responsibility.
As a closing remark, the initiative calls for sustainable environmental action to remain a collective responsibility involving young people, community leaders, religious institutions, government and residents.
