Flooding has cut off a major road linking Gurjiya, Kunshama, Dukawa and Tofa communities in Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State, leaving farmers struggling to move their harvests to markets.
The road, a key route for transporting tomatoes and sugarcane to Bunkure and Kano metropolis, has been submerged in parts, forcing residents and traders to resort to small boats.
For tomato farmers, the disruption could mean serious losses. The crop is highly perishable, and delays in transportation can lead to insect damage and spoilage.
Sugarcane farmers are also facing higher transportation costs as trucks struggle to access farms, threatening already-limited earnings.
Residents say they previously used communal labour and personal funds to repair sections of the road, but heavy rains have washed away the temporary work.
A 2026 study involving 346 farmers in Bunkure found that recurrent flooding affects crop growth, planting patterns and harvest quality, recommending better drainage, flood-resistant crops and early-warning systems.
Farmers now want a permanent solution not another temporary repair including proper drainage, culverts and elevated sections of the road.
