The world’s climate future is under discussion in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,...
ABUJA — A structure allegedly linked to a serving senator from Nigeria’s North-East and accused by residents of obstructing a major canal in Maitama Extension, Abuja, was reportedly still standing as of Friday afternoon, despite renewed government action against structures built on or blocking waterways.
The development comes after FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered the demolition of buildings obstructing designated water channels, warning that enforcement would apply regardless of the status of property owners.
Residents have alleged that part of the canal was covered with concrete to facilitate construction, restricting the flow of stormwater and contributing to flooding in the area.
The controversy has raised critical questions: Was the structure approved? Who granted the approval? Was the canal officially designated as a waterway, and why has the alleged obstruction not been removed?
For EcoMedia CENTRAL, the issue goes beyond political connections. It is about public safety, environmental protection and equal enforcement of development regulations.
We call on the FCT Administration and relevant authorities to clarify the status of the structure, investigate the alleged canal obstruction and ensure that Abuja’s waterways remain protected.
