KANO, NIGERIA -Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the revival of the Goron Dutse water facility after about three decades of non-operation.

The restored facility has three reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of about 40 million litres. According to the state government, treated water from Challawa Water Works will be conveyed through a 15.6-kilometre pipeline to Goron Dutse before being distributed to communities across Kano metropolis.

The development is part of wider efforts to rehabilitate Kano’s water infrastructure. The Governor said an ₦11 billion contract had been awarded for major works to strengthen water production, treatment and distribution across the state.

The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim, said the remaining preparations were at an advanced stage and that approval would be sought to commence pumping once the work is completed.

But important questions remain:

When will residents actually begin receiving the additional water?

Which communities will benefit from the restored facility?

How will the government maintain the infrastructure and prevent another long period of non-operation?

And can improved access to potable water help strengthen sanitation, public health and environmental resilience in Kano?

For EcoMedia CENTRAL, the revival of Goron Dutse is more than the restoration of an old facility. It is a development that raises important questions about water security, sustainable infrastructure and the future of Kano’s growing population.

After 30 years, can Goron Dutse become a lasting part of the solution to Kano’s water challenges?
