Scientists from around the world have gathered in Bhopal, India, for a key meeting to finalise the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. More than 100 leading experts from 56 countries are participating in the Fourth Lead Author Meeting, hosted by the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) with support from the Government of India.

The report will provide the latest scientific assessment of how climate change affects cities, highlighting the risks urban areas face and outlining practical strategies for adaptation and emissions reduction. It is the only Special Report being produced during the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Cycle and is expected to be completed in March 2027.

Developed by 97 experts representing 56 countries, the report has undergone an extensive and transparent review process. Thousands of comments from scientists, governments, and experts worldwide have been carefully examined to ensure the report reflects the best available scientific evidence.

During the week-long meeting, authors are addressing feedback received on the Second Order Draft and preparing the final version, which will be circulated to governments before its formal approval. IPCC officials described the meeting as a critical milestone in delivering a credible and globally relevant scientific assessment.

The completed report is expected to serve as an essential resource for policymakers, city planners, and communities worldwide, providing evidence-based guidance to help cities strengthen resilience, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and better prepare for the growing impacts of climate change.
