Eyes On The Environment Initiative, an environmental advocacy organisation, has donated 55 trees to Izazudeen Secondary School in Kano, as part of its efforts to promote environmental awareness, increase tree cover and encourage students to take an active role in protecting the environment.

Founder of the initiative, Abdulmajid Abubakar, used the occasion to explain that the organisation’s purpose goes beyond planting trees as he reflected on how they returned to a school where they had planted trees three years earlier to assess their condition. They found the trees to be in good health, which spured the initiative on to planting an additional 100 trees.

He described the experience as a demonstration of the importance of caring for planted trees and ensuring they survive beyond the day of planting.

According to him, the lack of sufficient trees in many schools contributes to excessive heat, making tree planting and proper maintenance essential for creating healthier learning environments.

In turn, students of Izazudeen Secondary School expressed commitment to protecting the newly planted trees and promised to care for them, keep them alive and ensure they grow into healthy trees that will benefit the school community.

One of the students, Abdullah Muhammad Sani, highlighted the importance of tree planting and stressed that planting trees must be accompanied by proper care and protection.

The Head of Department, Aliyu Ibrahim, appreciated the initiative for its contribution to the school and prayed for its continued success. He also promised that the students would be encouraged to take responsibility for the trees and ensure their proper maintenance.

He noted that the school experiences intense heat due to the lack of sufficient trees, making the donation particularly important for the comfort and wellbeing of students.

The occasion highlighted a simple but powerful environmental lesson: planting a tree is only the beginning; protecting it is what allows it to become a lasting solution. Through student participation, school commitment and continued monitoring, initiatives like this can help create greener, cooler and more sustainable learning spaces across Kano.
